Philadelphia Hope Fence Story John Breda

I met my girlfriend on OKCupid. She was only opening up her profile to see what happens and had no expectations. 2 years ago we met at a Starbucks and an hour long casual conversation exploded into a 3 hour long engagement of the minds. We became very fond of each other, and I enjoy giving her thoughtful, grandiose gifts in the name of love. June 1st was our 2 year anniversary. February of that same year, I devised a plan to bring her to hope fence (all the way from the Albany region in NY) for our anniversary and place a couple locks on the fence (and take one home for ourselves). It involved a luxury romantic train ride, a trip to the zoo, the melting pot, and of course – cheese steaks. The hardest part was keeping the entire thing a secret for nearly 6 months. Then the day came. Her mother and I schemed behind her back to get her out of the house while I made a Christmas lit blanket fort and ordered her favorite takeout. When she came back, we ate dinner and as the tears flowed I told her we were going to Philly that weekend. I showed her a small gift wrapped box, which contained custom engraved padlocks, I told her she wasn’t allowed to open this gift until we’re in Philly. She didn’t know what was inside and I never even mentioned Hope Fence. When we arrived at the Hilton, I led her downstairs out back, and pretended to notice hope fence – as if I wasn’t aware it was there. I proceeded to explain to her what ‘I think’ it is we were looking at and followed it with “and that brings me to your gift”. I revealed three padlocks, two for the fence, and one to take home. She cried in the middle of the crowed and we fastened it to the fence together, dropping a set of keys in the deposit. Absolutely blown away.
